The distributor is the company that has the right to distribute certain products from the manufacturer or brand owner under an agreement. The manufacturer, that is, the parent company that owns the product, must have authorized the distributor company. This is also possible with a deal.

One of the most important issues in the distributorship agreement is to become an exclusive distributor. Exclusive status gives the distributor a significant advantage in the market. Having this authorization means that only you are authorized to sell that product in the market specified in the agreement. In other words, it means that the manufacturer cannot sell his product to anyone but you in your market. At the very least, the manufacturer undertakes to do so by agreement. Single authorized distributors may also create their own sub-distributors if the markets and the nature of their business allows.

The manufacturer usually requests a sales commitment from the distributor to whom it is entitled to the sole authorized distribution, and prints it in the contract. The sole authority may also assign the right of distribution to the realization of this sale commitment.

The location of the authorized distributor’s market, in which regions it is authorized to distribute the related products, the duration of the agreement, the circumstances of the cancellation of the agreement, the prices of the products and the principles to be applied in the price change are also important issues of a distributorship agreement.

At the beginning of this series of articles, I wrote that I would talk about works that can be started with small capitals. Distributorship does not fall under this category in most cases. He may want serious capital. Especially if we are talking about being the distributor of big manufacturers. Large producers want to be distributors of financially strong companies with a warehouse, showroom, stores, a large sales team or network, who can allocate budget for advertising and promotion. As a result, it is expected that the firms that will import large amounts of finance will be strong.

However, to be the distributor of some small manufacturers producing innovative products, huge capital may not be a necessity. Still other things are needed, such as easy access to the target audience, market knowledge, sales network, strong motivation.

I used to support small companies who wanted to be our distributors while working in the manufacturing companies but whose capital was not very strong. Because, as a manufacturer, our primary goal is to meet the target market in some way. The first goal is to put our product into that market rather than big sales. Small companies with high motivation to cooperate are good partner candidates for exporters. They don’t push us for price and other conditions. As they grow, our brand grows in the market. Both sides win.

If you do not have a strong capital, you can follow the manufacturers that produce innovative products that are not very big. Of course it is not easy to find such companies, because they do not advertise and promote properly. Nevertheless, they attend the fair once a year. Fairs are therefore a good place to identify such producers and conduct preliminary talks.
